Rose Pogonia

Common name: Rose Pogonia (Snake Mouth)

Scientific name: Pogonia ophioglossoides

Dimensions:
  Flower: 1-1½" (2.5-4.5 cm) long
  Plant height: 8-16" (20-40 cm)

Blooming period: May-August

Habitat: Wet, open meadows and sphagnum bogs

Description: Single rose-pink (seldom white) flower on slender stem; 3 pink sepals, one erect and two opposite and lateral; 3 petals, 2 upper petals arching over lip; lip petal veined with red and bearded with short yellow hairs; sepals and petals colored alike and about same size. A single leaf-like bract up to 1" (2.5 cm) long, grows just beneath the flower. Solitary leaf 1½-4" (4-10 cm) long, egg-shaped to broadly lance-shaped (ovate to broadly lanceolate). Orchid family.
