Garden Phlox

Common name: Garden Phlox (Summer Phlox)

Scientific name: Phlox paniculata

Dimensions:
  Flower: 1/2-3/4" (1.5-2 cm) wide
  Plant height: 2-6' (60-180 cm)

Blooming period: July-September

Habitat: Rich woods, thickets, borders

Description: Large, densely short-hairy clusters of magenta-pink flowers at ends of erect stems; corolla trumpet-shaped, with 5 spreading lobes; one or more anthers at least partly projecting from the corolla tube; 5 short stamens; 1 pistil. Leaves 3-6" (7.5- 15 cm) long, opposite, narrowly oval or broadly lance-shaped, nearly stalkless with prominent lateral veins branching from central vein. Historically widely used as a medicinal herb. In New Hampshire, probably escaped from cultivation. Phlox family. (July 23)
