Scientific name: Sedum purpureum

Dimensions:
    Flower: 3/8-1/2" (8-12 mm) wide
    Plant height: 6-18" (15-45 cm)

Blooming period: August-September

Habitat: Disturbed areas, roadsides, open woods

Description: Five-pointed deep pink star-like flowers in broadly rounded, 2-3" (5-7.5 cm) wide at ends of fleshy, thick (succulent) stalks; 5 petals; short sepals. Leaves alternate or opposite, 1-2½" (2.5-6.5 cm) long, fleshy, elliptical, coarsely toothed. Escaped from cultivation, children have enjoyed separating the outer leave layers to make little "balloons". Stonecrop family. (September 16)
