Alpine Bilberry

Common name: Alpine Bilberry
(Bog Bilberry)

Scientific name: Vaccinium uliginosum

Dimensions:
  Flower: About ¼" (6 mm) wide
  Plant height: 6-24" (15-60 cm)

Blooming period: June-July

Habitat: Occurs all the way around the north pole (circumboreal), including rocky or sandy areas in alpine zone in New Hampshire

Description: White or pink bell-shaped, nodding flowers grow in clusters of 1-4 from the leaf axils of this low and branching matted shrub. Leaves ¼-1" (6 mm - 1 cm) long, thick, deciduous, blunt, entire (toothless), dull-green on top and pale and finely veined under. The fruit is sweet, dark blue or black, and edible. Heath family.
